Red Ribbon was established as a national awareness campaign in 1988 after the death of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. The celebration reaches more than 300,000 Ohioans every year, with the primary target being youth in elementary and secondary schools.
Red Ribbon Week is celebrated every year from October 23-31. In 2007, OCFC worked with Oregon City Schools - Title IV - Safe & Drug Free Schools Grant to produce Battle Red Day at Fassett and Eisenhower Middle Schools and Plant the Promise at Coy, Jerusalem, and Starr Elementary Schools. Battle Red Day was a challenge among all the classrooms to see which room could get the highest percentage of students to wear red on a designated day, to show their commitment to living drug free. Plant the Promise was a dedication by elementary school students to show their commitment to staying drug free by planting red tulips at the elementary schools. These tulips should be in bloom in April, so be sure to drive by and look for them blooming!
Our Red Ribbon Week activities were generously sponsored by the Safe and Drug Free Schools Program through Oregon City Schools - Title IV - Safe & Drug Free Schools Grant, and Wal-Mart.
