Underage Drinking Prevention Initiative
OCFC aims to increase awareness of a serious underage drinking problem in Oregon through a variety of programs and with several community partnerships, several of which are listed below.
Parents Who Host Lose the Most - a program from Drug Free Action Alliance, reminding parents of the laws regarding furnishing alcohol to minors. Clay and Cardinal Stritch High Schools partner with OCFC to get the message out to parents.
Start Talking Before They Start Drinking - a program sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Start Talking focuses on getting parents to talk to their kids at a younger age, as alcohol use is starting earlier and earlier every year. Many parents view underage drinking as a problem that starts in high school. Sadly, this is not the case. The average Oregon, Ohio area youth has his/her first sip of alcohol at the age of 12. Research shows that kids who drink before the age of 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol problems than those who start at 211. Furthermore, every year of delayed onset of drinking decreases the probability of alcohol dependence by 14%2. So Start Talking Before They Start Drinking. Support your children’s future - keep them alcohol free.
Compliance Checks - through a grant from the Drug Free Communities Support Program, OCFC is funding increased compliance checks and party patrols through the Oregon Police Department. The compliance checks will cover alcohol outlets and bars, and the party patrols will work off of tips provided to law enforcement on where teen alcohol parties might be happening.
Seller/Server Training - OCFC encourages local liquor permit holders to voluntarily participate in seller/server training for all their employees. Please visit this page for more information on training resources in Lucas County.
Other Activities
Red Ribbon Week - Occurring yearly from October 23-31, Red Ribbon Week focuses on encouraging children to remain drug free. OCFC collaborates with local businesses and Oregon City Schools to provide activities for children of all ages to commit to living drug free.
Developmental Assets - To build strong characteristics in youth that will keep them from making many different kinds of destructive decisions, including drug use, OCFC focuses on building assets using the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Asset model. Projects focus on teaching asset development to both children and adults. One of the main programs for the promotion of Developmental Assets is our Amazing Day of Play - held in collaboration with the Eastern YMCA. For more information on the 40 Developmental Assets, please visit www.search-institute.org.
Amazing Chase - This is our annual hands-on fundraising competition! A fun spin on the popular reality show “Amazing Race,” the Amazing Chase will be an adventure like none other! Proceeds will benefit our efforts to reduce substance abuse among youth, promote positive choices, and strengthen families.
