As a follow up from the Technology and your Teen Community Forum held at Clay High School last night, Danielle passed along a great website for kids and parents to visit.

http://www.athinline.org/

From their website:

“The Web and cell phones help us communicate, connect and learn in ways we never could before, but they’ve also forever changed how we interact with others. Things we used to share in person – and in private – can now be broadcast to thousands, instantly. Sometimes we type things we would never say to someone’s face. As a result, new issues like forced sexting, textual harassment and cyberbullyiing have emerged, which now affect a majority of young people in the U.S.

MTV’s A Thin Line campaign was developed to empower you to identify, respond to, and stop the spread of digital abuse in your life and amongst your peers. The campaign is built on the understanding that there’s a “thin line” between what may begin as a harmless joke and something that could end up having a serious impact on you or someone else. We know no generation has ever had to deal with this, so we want to partner with you to help figure it out. On-air, online and on your cell, we hope to spark a conversation and deliver information that helps you draw your own digital line.”

For those of you that attended the forum we would welcome any comments!

The Oregon City Schools is hosting an informational forum on social networking on March 1, 2010. The forum will begin at 7:00pm in the Clay High School Library. Our goal is to educate parents of K-12 students about sexting, Facebook, MySpace and what many children are doing on their phones and computers. If you think your child is too young, you might be surprised. Representatives from the Oregon Police Department and the Lucas County Prosecutor’s office will share examples of how students put themselves in danger using their computers and cell phones. District teacher, Amy Sweet, will show parents how to see what their children are doing and how to help protect their children from online predators. If you are a parent and not overly familiar with social networking, you won’t want to miss this informational forum. It will help you become better acquainted with the technology your sons/daughters are growing up with as part of their daily lives.

For questions about the forum please contact Nathan Quigg, Technology Director of Oregon City Schools, via e-mail at nquigg@oregoncs.org .

Last Thursday night after we left the CADCA conference, Danielle and I checked into another hotel next to the airport. When I made the reservations I clearly said that both rooms needed to be non-smoking. When we arrived at the hotel all of the rooms were booked, and my reservation said “smoking” room. Now, I don’t want to sound like a moralist or anything of the sort, I just don’t like the smell of smoke. But with limited options, I headed to the third floor smoking room while Danielle entered her second floor non-smoking room.

As I expected, the room was mediocre and there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke. I remember hearing stories that at one time it was legal to smoke on planes. That is crazy!?!?! Just say that out loud, “while thousands of feet in the air, confined to a small space with multiple engines and hundreds of gallons of gasoline,” it was legal to smoke. Sure, sounds like a great idea! While a hotel room is not exactly an airplane, it does seem a bit outlandish that there are still smoking and non-smoking rooms.

Where am I going with this story? Well, I ran across this article today: http://www.jointogether.org/news/research/summaries/2010/smoking-residue-could-pose.html. It turns out that the smoking residue on furniture and clothes is considered “third-hand smoke”.

That is it for today. Check back tomorrow!!!
